AHERA COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
Under AHERA, public and non-profit K–12 schools must:
- Perform an original asbestos inspection to identify the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in each school building
- Reinspect asbestos-containing materials every three years to document changes and conditions
- Maintain an up-to-date asbestos management plan and keep a copy on-site and available to the public
- Notify parents, teachers, and employee organizations annually about the availability of the asbestos management plan and any actions taken or planned
- Designate a contact person to ensure that all AHERA responsibilities are fulfilled
- Conduct periodic surveillance of known or suspected ACMs every six months
- Ensure all inspections and response actions are performed by licensed professionals
- Provide asbestos awareness training for custodial and maintenance staff
